Our History

Steeped in history, and ever evolving….
Exceptional design, print and digital services have been the hallmark of The Orcadian for decades, as a business steeped in Orkney heritage, history and culture.

Our beginnings in print and publishing actually date back to 1798, when Magnus Anderson established a bookbinding business in Kirkwall. The business was primarily focused on the binding of bibles, and gradually developed into a professional printing business — the first in the islands, and a dramatic development for Orkney.

Firmly standing the test of time, The Orcadian of the 21st Century can attribute its longevity to a forward-thinking, creative approach, as it has continued over the years to introduce cutting edge technology and development.

Based in our purpose built print centre at Hatston industrial estate, we are proud to publish The Orcadian newspaper and The Orkney Islander Magazine, celebrating the people, places and stories that make our islands so special. The newspaper was established in 1854 — and with its history spanning more than 160 years, The Orcadian remains deeply rooted in the Orkney community, remaining committed to serving local businesses, organisations and individuals.

Our heritage is a vital element of our working ethos to this day, but our services continue to evolve. Today, we combine the traditional craftsmanship of skilled local printers and finishers with the latest technology, to offer high-quality printing, creative graphic design and professional website design.

Our digital division supports a growing portfolio of customers with attractive, user-friendly and effective websites that help businesses thrive online. Alongside this, we have invested significantly in modern printing equipment enabling us to produce outstanding print products efficiently, while delivering the exceptional quality and customer service we are known for.

We have extended our services to Shetland and Caithness in recent years, earning a reputation for quality workmanship, speedy delivery, and a friendly, hands on approach.
